On Friday my dad finished his last day at the company he's worked for his whole working life, and in fact before that since he had a uni scholarship from them - that's 34.5 years with them. Which seemed to me like a really long time!

So how about all of you? How long have you worked for your company/organisation (if you do), and how long do you plan to keep working for them (barring unforeseen circumstances like them sacking you for embezzlement or something :D )?

And on a related topic, is the career you're in now the one you thought you would be in when you were younger (eg finished school/uni/training)? Do you think you'll change career at any point in the future?

The career is not the one I expected when I left school because I didn't really know what I wanted to do then. After working 8 years in a laboratory I went back and studied Chemical Engineering. I am now doing the sort of things I enjoy at work - almost a freelance problem solver and plant improvement guy, although it is a challenge to keep the boss open to new ideas.

I have been with this company for 10 years and I probably plan to stay with them for life as they have been quite good to me, and this is a pretty good area to live. Having said that, I think that with the degree behind me I can pretty much pull up stakes and shift anywhere in the world that takes my fancy. If circumstances absolutley require a move then I could pull that of relatively painlessly

I've worked there for four years now and I'm intending to look for a new job alternativly studying at a university ASAP.8

My work and the word career are mutually exclusive and yes I think, or rather hope, that I'll change career soon

3 years, but I stop for 6 months during that time because I had an operation

I forsee it to be my entire life. I really can't escape from this company

Aside from not havinglived any where longer than 3 years for most of my adult life, I didn't figure out what I wanted to do, and was really good at till I was 32, and now as an adult, the longest I have lived in the same state is 9 years and the longest with any company outside the military will be 5 years March 1st next year [img]smile.gif[/img]

I've been with Qantas for 13 years now and unless a good offer comes along which would mean leaving the country again, I do not think so. Especially with the kids. Aviation is not something I wanted to do, and only got a job because my dad worked with planes. The old "get a trade son" line. [img]graemlins/heee.gif[/img]

For A long while I hated my career and wanted to change but I'm resigned to my fate. Lets face it for someone that loves travel, working with an airline is not to bad ;)

Actually Aelia Jusa, with all the redundancies and transfers going on due to SARS and terrorism I may end up at the new hangers they are building at Brisbane airport. :rolleyes: I suppose there are worse things that could happen.

The longest time i worked for a company was 9 years. It was for Heineken. My current job is in it's 5th year now.

Let's see, I did 10 years as an officer in the military and got out last spring. Started working at my current job early in the summer and I'm currently contemplating another career change within the immediate future. I'm 28 and I know what I want to do... I just need to figure out how to get there!

How lucky for your father, Aelia. For him to be there so long he must have not only enjoyed his work but his employer must have treated him well. I think (at least in the U.S.) that the main reason ppl don't stay at one company anymore is because most (not all, just most) companies no longer treat their employees as individuals and as humans. They are now just treated as a number and a resource, and therefore, employees don't feel a sense of loyalty to their employer. It would be great if we could get back to that, though.

I would be going on four years with a company, but they decide to close up some shops, mine included. My plan four years ago was to stay with that company for a long time, as it was my dream to run a music/video game store and they paid really well. Too well, I guess, as the losses for that company last year was in the 230 million range with no good news foreseeable on the horizon.

I'm sticking with a career in retail managment because thats what I enjoy and I'm good at it, unless somebody is willing pay me to stay at home and play video games. :D

I won't be working for any company that depends on selling music as it's core business. In today's world that's a quick way to bankruptcy.

So now I'm unemployed and pretending to be on vacation until my phone rings with that magic interview. [img]smile.gif[/img]
