Hey there, new to Ironworks. ::waves to everyone in hopes they will be a friendly lot::

I have recently decided I would like to pick up a not so expensive, but very good quality PC RPG. Back in 99 I played Baldur's Gate for a month or so and loved it, but I had borrowed the disks and had to return them. I can remember when Icewind Dale was being promoed and I was thinking about picking it up (as I am an avid Salvatore fan), but life circumstances put a hold on things.

Recently I have been thinking about purchasing BG, but then was wondering if perhaps I should forget BG and pick up BGII. Then my mind leaped from BGII and thought I should go for IWD instead.

Could someone - anyone - make some other suggestions, I'm more than willing to investigate things. I'd like to keep the investment under $30.

Thanks in advance,
Tilia

I suggest that you get hold of Planscape: Torment.

IWD 2 was a great game. I never played either BG... but Everyone else here will recommend them to you.

So you would suggest IWD 2 over IWD, why? How was the 2nd better than the 1st. Do I need to know about the 1st before the 2nd. I'm aways wary about purchasing the second without knowing the first of anything. Perhaps that just because with books, you usually need the background info from the first before you proceed to the second - if it's a good series anyway. I do not know if the RPG's are like that as well.

You need know nothing about the first for the second. I liked the 3rd Edition DnD over the 2nd Ed used in IWD1. It made more sense to me. And the subraces was cool. I was very Drizzt mad... so having the option of being a drow... rather than just an elf with dark skin was cool.

Is NWN under $30?
IWD is based on 2nd ed rules and has similar graphics to BG. IWD2 uses 3rd ed rules and has better graphics, a bit better than bg2 teo i think.

I'd get bot BG 1 and 2... if you can afford it ofcourse, get the Throne of Bhaal expansion too and play it through, it's simply great and believe me you'll never see games ike these released again ever.

Welcome to IW!!!

My wife got me the ultimate BG2 collection with SOA and TOB last Christmas - I think it was $20. Great role playing and story. Great NPC's, pretty deep selection of classes. IWD2 is also great, more hack and slash, without any NPC's to control. You create all your own characters, so you miss out on all the little quirks (like Minsc...). Less class choices, but more race choices as far as subraces (Drow, Assimar, Tiefling, Deep Gnome, etc.) I'd say you can't go wrong with either one.

Edit - I never played IWD 1 - you needn't know anything about it to play 2. There are small references throughout that you may enjoy more if you did play 1, but that's about it.

I, too, suggest Planescape: Torment.
