Having computer problems with my Windows Millenuim again. I was deleting un-needed files (like games) and the computer re-booted by itself after I removed the old pop-up stopped that I had. Now that I've restarted the computer, the background changed to a picture that I think I had a long time ago. Most of my desktop is gone and I can't even access the start-up menu. I click on 'start' and it just gets stuck there, although the rest of the computer doesn't freeze. I try to open 'my computer,' only to get an error telling me that my Active X settings don't allow the files to be viewed. How do I make my computer go back to how it used to be? I can't do anything on it at all.

Safe mode, load restore point. Since Millenium is no longer suported by Microsoft(yes, it is the worst Windows ever, switch if possible), and they offer no new updates, your system restore point might be quite dated unless you've made some yourself.

Does Millenium even support that? I know XP does, though I turned mine off for streamlining reasons, I'm not sure about ME.

i can't even open up system restore, even in safe mode. it just doesn't open up.

Have you got another hard drive with some room/no important data/data that you can somehow transfer? I'd use that to create a new windows, and salvage what I can from this hard.

Your other option is to boot from your install CD and do a repair installation of Windows. That should fix what's wrong and leave most, if not all, of your data and settings intact.

ok, so I just found my Microsoft XP professional CD. The only files that I want to save from that computer are all of my Baldur's Gate and Wizard's and Warriors files. However, the computer doesn't have a CD burner and it doesn't have internet for me to transfer the files to this one through a network connection. Is there any other way for me to save those files before I install Windows XP?

When repairing an instillation, it does notdelete anything, it just replaces all the neccesary windows files.

So all you're data should still be there when it's done ;)

even if I'm changing it from Windows ME to Windows XP? I thought I have to do a full re-install for that. Am I wrong?

Hmm, I see, well you can do an upgrade, though I'm no specialist on upgrades, but I would imagine all your stuff would still be there...
