"Morning Edition, November 15, 2005 * OK, so you've spent weeks setting
up more than four million dominos, trying to break the Guinness World
Record for falling dominos. And then a bird swoops in through a window,
smacks one of the dominos, and ... yes, they all begin to go. That's
what happened to a team from a Dutch TV company. A system of breaks in
the chain stopped the falling dominos at 23,000. The sparrow who's tiny
wing wrecked such havoc fared much worse. An exterminator on site shot
it."

I can only hope someone got video of it. Personally, I'm impressed with the exterminator... shooting something as small as a sparrow without knocking over any more dominos is quite amazing in my book.

Sucks to be him.

Well, it indeed sucks to be the exterminator. Animal protectors from all over the country, and even from Germany, are rising to this issue, even threatening to kill the exterminator!

Hey, its' not the bird's fault! Sheesh, birds fly and sometimes hit things... I'm gonna assume it was injured or ill, otherwise I'm mad at the trigger happy exterminator.

Now they can reset the dominoes and try again and have a great story for when they do get in the book of records.

That's unfair to all the illegal Poles and other eastern Europeans we've imported to do the gruesome task of placing the stones, though. Imagine the pain they must feel because of that bird!

Apparently the Animal Protectors are of the opinion that the bird was a protected species. Can't imagine that, really

The exterminator seems to claim he's spent two hours stalking the sparrow through the domino fields to try and catch it with nets, and when that didn't work, the bird was shot. He'd not need a license to kill the creature as he's received a more general permission to kill bothersome creatures inside buildings as he's a professional.

But yes, it is a protected species, animal rights organisations are horrified at the killing, the exterminator received a death-threat and a radio announcer offers a reward to whomever gets into the building and triggers the remaining dominos before the official event.

And all it wanted was to be out of the rain for a minute...

I don't believe that sparrow is the right name for the bird in question. With all due respect to Babelfish ofcourse ;)

Big deal, they're breaking the record every year here, and they never fail. Frankly, it's becoming somewhat boring. That sparrow deserves a statue as far as i'm concerned.
