I have heard this may become a new quick standard for health insurance folks. Now, I'm not into media hype, nor conspiracy theories, but...If the CDC is posting this, then placing a disclaimer it is not/should not be used as a single test for BMI all on the same site...Phht! Anyhow, I guess I'm just plain Obese! But not to worry, it does not take into account your OVERALL condition. Really? So, the HMO mafia is going to send someone to your house to investigate your OVERALL condition? Right. 6'1" 235 lbs BMI=31 = Obese! 1.87M 108Kg BMI=30.9 =Still Obese! In order to be middle "normal" I can only weigh 180 lbs. |
Shaquille O'Neal: 7'1" 325 lbs
BMI = 30.1 = obese George W Bush: 6'0" 190 lbs BMI = 25.8 = overwieght Me: 5'7" 190 lbs BMI = 30.5 = obese Right... So, I know for fact that I'm a bit pudgy...but if I lost as much weight as I could imagine losing...30 pounds, leaving me at 160, my muscle-mass pushes me into the "overweight" category. These things never, NEVER take muscle mass into account. And that's how the CDC has defined obesity for at least the last five years. But, at least I'm only as obese as Shaq. |
Ohh boy, this oughta be good for me.
Me: 6'3" 262 lbs. BMI = 32.7 You're right Ilander, these things never take muscle mass into account whenever it comes to weight. I've got a large bone frame, but according to this, I could be 200 lbs. and still be overweight. |
Anyone know they why do it? I mean, isn't it better to take into account bodyfat%?
|
Yes, yes it is, Sir Degrader...though it is indeed ture that bigger people, even if they're muscular and trim, have a bit more cardiovascular strain...but calling them "obese" for it seems a bit of a misnomer.
Basically speaking, people don't know their heads from holes in the ground when talking about weight and obesity. |
Well, I'm obese at my current weight, which isn't surprising really. I've packed on a couple extra pounds during my extended illness. However, I was still considered overweight at my prime:
5' 9" 185lbs. Make me laugh. Here's the trick to that. I worked physically hard for a living before I got sick, and that means that my cardio workout was way up there, as well as my strength "training". I was a carpenter, moving fast, and carrying what I had to carry to do the job. The point is, if you get to a fit weight that puts you into one of those categories, your whole body is fit, not just your physical appearance. |
Hmm..
5'9" and 170lbs. BMI: 25.1 (just barely overweight) But again, without taking into account bone structure, lean mass vs. fat, as well as the cholesterol factor. Just what exactly are they thinking? It's almost as bad as the people out there looking for the cure all, make me beautiful and slim pill. |
19.8, and that's overestimating my weight I think. Ah well. I'm still happy with my 10-13% bodyfat, even if I've stopped my daily 6-8k runs.

Over wight here. Kinda thought that since my ass is 5 feet wide.
My job does not help. I sit in front of 8 computer screens. Wearing slippers. |
This system doesn't take in any factor like Muscle
vs body fat because I'm 6'2" and weigh 267 yet just 5 Days ago I had my yearly complete physical and my body fat was only 4%! I have lifted weights most of my life and still only have a 28" waist and a 58" chest and yet the Calculator says my BMI is 34.3 and I'm Obese yet my doctor says other than my knees having both been replaced that I'm in better health physically than 80% of his patients not to mention alot stronger then all of them. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see any other calculation to be considered in the equation so this system is a bit flawed or did I miss something that needed to be added.? Never mind in reading further I find that this scale is only a single part of the test for health and I'm not considered to be Obese. Leave it to me to only read half the artical :D [ 01-26-2006, 11:05 PM: Message edited by: TheCrimsomBlade ] |
