I need some help here.
I haven't listened to music in something like 6-7 years, even before that I rarely did. Thas was not a problem for me, I'd rather read a book or watch a movie in my spare time. But I decided to meet some new people, make some more friends. I thought music would be a good way to have a conversation with someone I don't know much about, so I decided to start listening to some. The problem is that I don't know any groups, or even much "styles". Could you people held me? Can you give me the name of some groups or singers you like? Preferably from different styles, so that I can listen and find out what I like... [ 02-09-2006, 12:56 AM: Message edited by: Luvian ] |
If WolfMother haven't made it over there yet, they soon will. Retro 70s Led Zep/Black Sabbath kinda stuff. Only modern.
The White Stripes is good for all occasions. Kid Kenobi (dj) puts out some funky doov doovs if you're partial to it. What kind of music did you like when you did listen to it? |
If the BeeGees were big when you quit listening to music, and who could blame you for that, then you are either out of luck, or lucky, since they aren't a major factor anymore. Hooray...
My tastes are kinda varied. I like driving hard rock, some pop/rock kind of stuff, and classical music. http://www.evanescence.com http://www.seether.com These are really good bands, with some videos posted so that you can check them out. I also go for stuff by Metallica, Megadeth, and Joe Satriani, a name that may not ring any bells, depending. Edit: There is also a link in my sig, but that won't do you much good as an ice breaker, unless they have happened to have heard of me... [ 02-09-2006, 06:33 AM: Message edited by: robertthebard ] |
I never listened to music long enough to get preferences...

I have found these bands and musicians are source of endless discussion and debates among my friends
Johnny Cash Bob Dylan Radiohead Talking Heads Weezer Smashing Pumpkins Nick Cave Einzturzende Neubauten and ofcourse Granddaddy of music nerdism Pink Floyd... |
I gave up on listening to other music. The only thing I listen to now is Pink Floyd 24/7. Its like crack in sound wave form. I can list every single song from every album in order and I can say every single lyric. That is how sad it has grown to be.

The good news is that there are entire genres that nobody expects anyone to know anything about: classical, techno, country, metal, punk, reggae, jazz, rap, the blues, and any number of spinoffs. Knowing one of those exempts you from knowing any of the others (except classical - nothing you can learn in school counts lol, and beware of country...it's either loved or hated for the most part). What does that leave? Pop and rock, and classic rock at that, is essentially what's left. Pop, as of the last 10 years, however, is mostly for 12 year old girls. Some bands are forces to be reckoned with, and are likely to come up. I think most of the ones listed here are fair game.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_selling_music_artists That's a list of popular music - but you don't wanna be that mainstream. There's nothing less cool than professing your love for a top 40's band, unless they hit that in the mid 70's ;) Maybe the best thing you could do is get a trial prescription to an internet radio site that lets you listen to stations by genre. People would probably be surprised if you didn't know something about one of those genres above and be able to name a much lesser known band - most people our age can I've found. Aside from what's been listed, I've always been partial to Canada's own Rush as far as musicality is concerned. Astounding drumming and bass. There are also a few easy ways out for being able to talk with people who like the genres I listed, by learning about a founder or 'classic'/mainstay in the genre. Metal: Black Sabbath/Iron Maiden/Metallica, Indy Rock - Dave Matthews Band maybe, Blues: BB King, Jazz: "Modeski, Martin, and Wood", Country: Johnny Cash is the non-country country ;) , Punk: Bad Religion, Ramones...and like I said...I know almost nothing about the others Have fun...Music's been my other love aside from PC games, and exploring it is part of that fun. |
Screw the more friends bit.
What about joining some kinda groups. ;) And when you get some friends. Can you share them with me. |
