"I'm very impressed," said Christian Vanneque, a French judge who was at the original tasting in 1976.

"I don't know if I will be able to go back to France," he added. "After a second time, they will kill me."

They're losing their touch. The wines i buy lately are mostly Australian and South African, those are pretty good too.

Actually I agree. I find New Zealnd's best... also the ones from Australia or Chile

I still think the best of French is better than the best of the New World, but for reasonably priced, or even moderately expensive wines, the New World wins hands down.

Aragorn has it... the French still make the best wines in the world, and the top 'new world' brands are virtually all grown on (origonally) French vines.

I do love the affordability of some of California's premier wines though. The Stags Leap Merlot from Mondavi is one of my favorites... and you can buy a bottle for less than 35 bucks.

New World all the way for me. Chile and Australia in particular.
