Opetron vs X2 Athlon 64 bit

I am confused on how the CPU speeds works. Ok my knowledge on the current technology is lagging.

What is the difference between Opetron and Athlon 64. I know that Athlon 64 is mainly for desktop while opetron is meant for servers.

There are two processors I found which are similar prices. I need to know the speeds.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core CPU, AM2, 3.0Ghz
VS
AMD Dual-Core Opteron 2210, Socket F (1207), HT 1000MHz

What are the speed difference and what is really the difference?

As you say, Opterons are mainly meant for servers, so I'd suggest the Athlon. The opteron has a different socket, which means that you'll need a Socket F motherboard, which are usually also server orientated, rather than home user orientated.

Some people still run Opterons because they're often exceptional overclockers though.

But given that you're posting here asking the difference... I'd suggest the Athlon. That's a very nice processor... mine's only a 3800 :(

Edit: Oh yeah, and as for speed... the Opteron has a clock speed of 1.8 GHz, compared to the Athlon's 3.0 GHz... but that doesn't mean that much between different types of processor. You'd have to find benchmarks to get a real idea.

hmmm... thanks for that . Yeah having a 4 year old computer here, its about time for me to upgrade :D . Just waiting for the right moment. I still see the prices just going downwards at this time.
