People works too, but it feels a little condescending to me. Probably because too many times have I heard people (there it goes!) refer to "THOSE people", implying that a particular group was beneath them.
Sheesh! You can overanalyze everything, and the beauty of the English language (and many others) is that you can convey your message in multiple ways.
Hmph. Wonder if this was ever a topic in a foreign language class...
