This is a strange one... I haven't heard of it before. The reason it is so strange is that the scripting that kills the player who tries to take the Rift Device to the surface is an area script attached to the main sewer area (AR0701.) That script should run nowhere else but in AR0701, certainly not in the area where the second piece of the rod is found, in the beholder lair accessed through the Pit of the Faithless (AR0205.) I haven't made any changes to this script or AR0701 itself.

You can check the area you are in by pressing X if you have keyboard cheats enabled. You'll see the ARxxxx area code appear.

If you are in AR0205 (or anywhere but AR0701) when this happens and this problem persists without explanation, then please e-mail me a ZIP or RAR or whatever format you like of your savegame and I will have a look at it.
