It's not pointless; the only way to leave the Underdark without seeing Adalon again is to convince the Drow to open the door--and that's not as easy as it looks. Most of the time, they just turn hostile, and you're still sealed in the Underdark. If they DO open it, then going through the door dispels the Drow Illusion, and all of Ust Natha turns hostile to you (except the Rope Quest, oddly), thus screwing you out of any quests you may have left undone. So, all in all, you're staying in the Underdark until you're done with Ust Natha, whether it's because you have to stay, or because you want to stay.

It's weird that you can leave the Underdark with the Eggs still in your possession, but not as weird as the fact that Adalon doesn't come after them. (And what would happen if they hatched? How do mother Dragons deal with their rebellious teenaged offspring?)
