One of my mates has played both quite a bit and he thinks rugby is tougher. This isn't because the hits are harder, but you get far less time to recover (he was a flanker though), and you can have 15 players bundled on top of you. I would agree with him, however, I can't see American football being played without pads, it would be suicidal.
