@ Larry; This is hard to explain, but I'll try. In the current system: when we retire we go onto the temporary retired roster. We also receive a "Recall to active duty" number. This number is the Armys "Lottery", and sits at the G-1 HQDA-OPM, awaiting to be activated. If, after two years from date of retirement, the number is still in-active, then we are transferred to the permenant retired roster. However if, the number is "called" then the retiree is fully reinstated back into the Army, with past promotion board files reviewed with a "special" review board, etc.. If recalled, then it is usually another four years, or rare instance, full term of remaining eligibility, or age 55, whichever occurs first. Additionally, ALL retirees are subject to recall until age 55, based upon "needs of the Army". The SALUTE team is good at keeping us reminded about the voluntary recall program. I do have a personal acquaintance that joined back under this program. Thinking he was going to be an instructor, the needs of the Army were far greater than he was ever prepared for, and ended up conducting the most gut wrenching job imaginable, casulty assistance. As a trained killer, trigger puller, sniper, assassin for my government, whatever you want to call me, don't call me for that!

So in essence, my recall number is higher than the Army predicts for forced recall through my two year mark. They have taken this opportunity to remind me one last time about the voluntary program, and went so far as to provide complete contact information. In personal perspective, what this really means to me is: Closure, phase one. Phase two is over a dozen years away, and I'm unsure of anything between now and then.
