I don't know about prices in your area, but I got a nice 7950GT with 512 ram for 200 euros. It's worth the investment. In my area I can get a 7900GT or 7950GT in the same price class as the 8600 GTS and it's a better card. The only advantage of the 8600 would be DX10, which isn't going to support any good games for a while anyway.

If someone can give some info on how the 8500 or 8600 compare to the 7900 or 7600 it would help!

EDIT: I found this. As you can see the 8600 is hardly better than the 7600, and the 7900 GS is better, and probably cheaper or the same price.
