"Data mining" is the term for looking at large amounts of data and hoping for some statistically significant nugget, like diet soda drinkers having the same risk of metabolic syndrome as non-diet drinker. It's what university non-professors have to do if they want to become professors.

It can also "discover" truths like most killers play video games, thereby implying that video games turn you into killers.

Flip this study around, and it shows that drinking diet soda has no significant impact on your risk of developing metabolic syndrome.

I love this line...

"It's intriguing and it begs an explanation by people who are qualified to do studies to understand this better," said Vasan, of Boston University School of Medicine.

So... you did this study, but you're not qualified to do it?
