Any potions that lower your saving throws will help agains the Umber Hulks(heroism or invulnerability). But if someone does get confused you should let them run around and not try to 'free' them. Remember you are the Illithids play toy, they control your mind, if you dissobey them they will kill you (your guard tells you this). Let the confusion wear off and then wait, you will be re-united with your party member shortly, I would sugest making him/her invisible to help keep them out of danger. Keep playing and you will find away to get him/her back.
