Edwin sucks. The same items on Nadia result in an AC of -3 for Nadia and +4 for Edwin; he can't take any punishment until you get uber items. Specialist mages represented by NPCs include conjuror (Edwin) and Illusionist (Jan). So what I recommend, if you're set on doing a specialist mage, is a human necromancer with really decent constitution, dual classed to a fighter later on.
