To resolve this problem:

a) apply all updates to your OS (i.e. Windows users run Windows Update)
b) update your graphics drivers
c) run some form of system checking software to ensure hard drive/ram integrity

Once you've done that, your system should be at least a little more stable.

If the problem persists during bouts of heavy gaming, keep an eye on your CPU and graphics card temperatures, they can cause massive problems if they overheat.
