I can't help you with your question, as I have never used one, but I have completed BG1+TotSC (UK version also, with exact same patches as you)...and I can say that you don't need to remove the cap. I doubt you will hit the 161,000 by TotSC.
My thief hit 156,400, and that is with doing virtually every quest (im that kind of player)...
So my advice would be to not get hung up about it, and just enjoy the game.
