i almost hesitate to say this but could your troll cage problem be a fog of war thing? i'm sure you'll have tried moving to every position you can around the door . . . if you could get the 'four leafed clover' symbol to show anywhere in the cage and let your characters path finding sort it out . . . never had a problem with this myself
and, as usual, are you fully patched? (see sitcky form FAQ above for details if not)
