I read somewhere that Sax Rohmer, who wrote the Fu Manchu epics in the '30's about the original Devil Doctor, when he was asked why people kept buying books about such an evil man, said that people had invested so much time in hating him, that they enjoyed seeing him lose in so many different ways.
