"An Assertion failed in UIControlButtons.cpp at line number 3039"

I am still getting this darn crash and failure and the problem of the blank menu on top of the old game menu when I begin HOW. (UGH! I think I'll never get it done!) I am supposed to keep using disk 2 of IWD, right?

Please, will anyone be able help me resolve this issue

this is what I've done:
beat game and edited .ini file to show movie
patches were installed 105

installed HOW and patch 106
game will not begin, but will crash with that error

uninstalled game
reinstalled IWD and patch 105
reinstalled HOW and patch 106
installed TotLM
Results have no change

video card is XTASY 9600
sound card is SB Live!
610M free space on my hard drive
1G RAM
AMD Athlon processor
WINXP PRO SP2
I am the admin of my pc
