1. Paladin is a good class but be careful as some of the oders have multiclass restrictions.

2. I have never tried ranger but I think Ranger/fighter should do well as a tank

3. Barbarian/fighter is a deadly combo (or so I have read in other people's post)

4. Sorcerer is a kickass spellcaster but you will have to choose wisely on the available spells.

Note: At higher levels, Animate dead is a real kickass spell, plus the animated undeads stays with you for 16 hours (I think) which renders them as good disposable tanks.
