The boogre quest is not necessary for completing the main story, but you miss some guild promotions and one item you need to become Zenmaster.
To be blunt about Kol: you can't kill him because that would screw up a bit of the story, and they didn't feel like adjusting the story for it. (By the way, just for curiosity I killed Erathmedor afterwards, and I was glad he didn't do those 139 points of damage to me every time he hit.)
