While I still find it widely implausible that a mage should use a wand to kill a simple rabbit (they cast a small fortune to recharge) the use of the Magic Missile spell itself (from memory) is not at all that strange.
The Magic Missile is unlike most other magical attacks in that it doesn't eradicate it's target in some form of violent elemental surge, but rather leaves the corpse widely undamaged. With an Acid Arrow or Burning Hands you would certainly ruin the pelt and most probably also the meat making the whole endavour quite pointless. With a Magic Missile, however both the pelt and the meat will be almost undamaged.
The same effect can only be duplicated with necromantics, that are either ineffective or very powerful and tends to provoke suspicion.
