To remove Tray icons how about:
Right-click on the Start button
Select Explore
Select Programs
Select StartUp
Delete the applicable shortcuts
Note: if you have applications that produce the icons independently of the StartUp folder (like some anti-virus or system-level apps) you'll need to disable their appearance in the Tray in those programs' configuration menus.
