I have discovered that a sorcerer makes a good fighter as well, since they don't have to waste time memorizing spells, they have more time to learn sword-play, and the high charisma helps. Maybe a Paladin-Sorcerer would kick some nice ass...but I do not care for paladins. This character would later be upgraded to a red dragon diciple easily if and when you purchased the new expansion. Therefore your time would be well spent.
That would be my choice if I were where you are now.
