Actually, he's fighting Agent Smith. He managed to survive (won't spoil you as to how, but it has been floating around for months about that big fight at the end of the movie with the army of Agent Smiths). Plus, that tactic really won't work (though I agree with one critic; why fight them when you can just fly away?
).
