the best i've found is the red dragon scale armour 9from killing firkragg). i think in underdark there's some really powerful stuff but i haven't got that far yet. also you can get some nice armour using the limited wish spell and selecting a one time wish for a magical item - it's full plate+2, so that's a -2 AC. hope that helps!
