You're right about that corpse-turned-packhorse thing not being a nice thing to do, but it wouldn't bother me to do something along those lines to any of the NPCs who whine about not liking where you've taken them.
However, I'm afraid that strategy won't work in Wiz8, as it is impossible to give items to characters who are dead (and also because each character can only carry 8 items apart from whatever s/he is wearing). But since you can set up portals directly in front of chests, lugging around all that extra weight isn't a problem.
A lot of people talk about the chests of Antone and Anna, but if you're a compulsive sorter (such as moi), you might want to keep an eye out for the barracks in the Umpani camp. You can dedicate one chest to lightning bolts, one to impaling stones, one to magic nectars, etc. and so forth.
