My general rule is to always start as a fighter and dual (for hit points, use of bows, etc.) when the class combination allows. My favorite party in BGII
Cavalier (Yes, I'm a goody goody)
Kensai/ Mage (you talkin' to me?)
Fighter/ Cleric (dual, not multi)
Inquisitor or Barbarian
Swashbuckler or fighter/ thief(dual)
Sorcerer
Sometimes I substitute a rabid squirrel(nut biter kit) for the sorcerer.
