the final battle with irenicus is not a difficult battle if you make proper preparations. have all your magic users have pre-cast spell triggers that release three breaches and pierce magics on him. a few of these and all his defenses are down. after that he'll regenerate like a madman so just cast all your insanely damaging magic on him and he'll die without a problem (abi's, fireballs, power words and even magic missiles.) also a good idea for him is spell sequencers that send damaging spells at him. you gotta have some true seeing memorized, as well as prot. from evil and all the major magic-defense spells: spell immunity, spell turning, globe of invulnerability, spell trap, protection from magical energy and shield of the arcon (is that spelled right?) for your cleric.
