Maria moves about quietly preparing breakfast for the workmen. Bartleby is still sleeping slumped across the bar and from the look on his face the night did not pass easily for him. At the rate these men have been working the repairs to the bar area should be completed in another day or two and the thought of a return to normal routines relaxes her. She prepares two tables with plates and utensils and, hearing the sound of movement upstairs, moves to wake the slumbering tavern owner.
