I've done the codebook quest so that must be the reason I can't join them.

About the missing mage: I've the latest patch so the only solution must be using the console as you suggest.
The thing is I've never used the console before, so I'm not really sure what to do. Should where you write "npcid" be substituted with a code for that particular npc and if so, where do I find that?
