You can't actually fight the pred. in the early levels. However, judging by your post you are already later in the game. If you are not, stop reading.
Its been awhile ago since I played this, so I may be a bit off. At some point, you are back on your way to ship to evacuate. The Pred. will open fire at you from a rooftop, then disapear. If you continue, he will at some point attack you from behind.
