Hello,
well, you could dual class a fighter to mage, yet you could also play as a multiclassed fighter/mage (a nice half-elf, perhaps?) right from the get-go (bards have magic abilities up to the 6th level...).

Diablo 2 is a great game, Baldur's Gate 2 is a great game. They have similarities, yet they are not the same game. Both are famous as being extremely popular, this is because both are excellent. Do yourself a favor and get both.
