I got one as a gift when I was 17 even though I had been cooking and baking since I was 7. It was well used tweenty years later and my son insisted he be allowed to keep it when he turned 18. The recipes are simple, easy to read and follow and they all taste good!
I am an excellent cook and I have Betty to thank for teaching me!

I second this. Try to find either an original Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook, or the new, reprinted version (which comes in a handy looseleaf format). It has a red and white cover. This is the best cookbook for beginners that I have found. It even has pictures to show you how things should look.
Even after years of cooking, I still refer to mine when I want to learn how to do something new.
