We did it! After much nail biting and sweat England qualified for the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan and South Korea. Three minutes into injury time at the end of the match England were losing 2-1 to Greece at home. This would mean that Germany qualified and England would need to play off against Ukraine or Belarus. Up stepped captain David Beckham to curl a 20 yard free kick passed the statuesque Greek keeper to send England fans wild and German and Scots fans
into despair.
BTW - it probably passed most Americans by, but the US also qualified on Sunday. The match against Jamaica was being played at the time the attacks on the Taleban were announced.
Spare a thought for Ireland who may have to face Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia or Uzbekistan in a playy off.
