Actually, I like to concentrate on taking the Thief (Brennan Risling) out first, as I don't want him to get away.
True--area of effect spells are gold here, as all your enemies are contained in a relatively small area, and can't get away from the spell's effects. For the same reason, Lightning spells are good, as there's lots of walls for them to bounce off of.
Bug here: The dialogue you have with Mencar Pebblecrusher (the Dwarf) does NOT pause the game--which I found out when I used a Wand of Lightning to take out Sorcerous Amon and Pooky. They both died, Smaeluv and Brennan went hostile and attacked--and I couldn't direct my party, because my Mage/Thief was in a dialogue with Mencar. the Barbarian and Thief were hacking at me while I was talking to their boss, and I had to finish the dialogue before I could fight back. Annoying.
