Hmmm. I would think that if they were not motivated to do their best, then that performance would not be their best, no? Motivation wouldn't affect their 'best', if best performance is defined as their optimum performance, because in their optimum performance their motivation would always be at its highest. I would think the only factors that would change what someone's 'best' performance is, would be if their skill level changed, or circumstances changed. For example, if one was putting in their best performance fishing, then when they first started their best performance might be catching one fish, because they haven't got the hang of casting and such. When they were more experienced their best performance might be 10 fish, because their skill with the rod is higher. But then it would be mediated by circumstances, say how many fish there were in the water. But if they were not motivated to catch a lot of fish, then they would not be giving their best performance
