I made a all elven ranger party ones, it wasn't that though in my experience. You are going to have to rely on items a lot. Most of the times against mages it is worth a try to give all your resistance giving items to one of the chars and then make him go up-front. Red dragon armor+ring of fire is very useful. Kill Gangaxx as soon as you can to get that/those ring(s). The magic resistance they/it give is useful.
