It is right to be skeptical of claims at this point, by BOTH sides. The US government and military has demonstrated time and again throughout history that it will cheerfully lie to its own people in order to carry out its purposes.
The Gulf War comes to mind. Remember in that war how the US military and press maintained throughout that our air strikes were all of a surgical nature against military targets only with a minimum of civilian casualties? It wasn't until afterwards that the truth came out that was a bald faced lie.
