Timber, wrt the new vs the old...a lot of people are afraid of modern engine controls but really if you take the effort to understand the systems it's actually easier to make these puppies sit up and sing. I'm a mechanic by trade, and I must say that I will take any motor and install engine electronics (ie, electronic ingition and fuel injection) that will allow it to kick the @$$ of any equivalent carbureted motor, with FAR less effort *and* expense...

You can purchase software for your PC, fairly cheaply I might add, to reprogram the PROM in your cars computer allowing you to recalibrate fuel and spark advance curves...no rejetting or wrenching necessary. BMW actually makes this process easy, if you have the right tools. You can reprogram their processors right in the car.

And since EFI systems have been around for a while, it's easy to get otherwise expensive parts fairly cheaply from the wrecking yards. (Injectors and such last a long long time, and don't often wear out)
