Even with the improved mod, the Twisted Rune falls pretty quickly to the right combination of spells. My necromancer almost took them down on his first try - ran into his own skull trap - but they went down on try number two.
The keys are mordekainen's swords, time stop, repeated dragon's breaths, prismatic spray, spell trigger filled with skull traps and a fallen planar to clean up the mess.
Spellstrike and spell trap are also musts.
Didn't even need the cloak of cheese, just let my Mordekainen's swords clog up the opening to the entryway and hid around corner so Beholder couldn't zap me.
The Beholder did snuff out a number of Mordies swords, but my necro can summon like 9 of them, so they kept coming.
A side note: while it is not necessarily an economic use of the spell, the visual and audio effect of improved alacrity and mordekainen's swords in a quick slot is pretty cool, a wall of swords rises around your mage.
I must confess, I am only playing on hard though - this is my first time soloing. Am considering sliding the bar up to insane though, since only two battles have been very challenging -i.e. lots of reloads - Bodhi and the Mind Flayers lair in the underdark.
