Hmmm, I'd say if you're going for a small party, you better take 1 tank and 1 good spell caster. Edwin is a really good choice actually, and I've come to find out if you do his little side-quest in the graveyard, he'll never bug you or ditch you before or during a fight. Korgan? Hmm, not too bad a choice, he might even get along with Edwin, so him and Minsc would probably be my top 2 choices as tanks. Jaheira would probably be only a good or best choice against spell casters only for one reason, Insect Swarm. Summon it on a group that has a mage in it, and he'll have a spell casting failure at least 50% of the time. Plus it'll make them have morale failures, and they'll run away. (or run around, which ever) Unfortunanetly, I don't know but about thief classes, so you'll have to ask somebody else on this.
