Yes, you can go back to the Underdark after leaving it.

I remember leaving the underdark while playing the game ages ago. I don't know why, but I had to go back into it again. As far as I remember, it was just a matter of stomping right back into it, past that dragon and so on into the underdark.

I could be wrong though ... Sorry!

You actually don't even have to involve the Dragon at all, if you don't want to. (Personally, I'm taking some Silver Dragon Eggs on a tour of Amn. If they don't hatch, I'll assume that they're duds and take them back for a full refund.) Just go back in via the way you left, and viola. You'll still get the full EXP for clearing the Eastern Tunnels, etc., and you can do some pretty fun things: When Simyaz demands the Silver Sword Blade, you can whack him with the Silver Sword itself, etc.

Just make sure you do everything you need to in Ust Natha, because your disguise fails as you leave and if you try to go back, they'll be hostile towards you.

Thought it'd tickle your funnybone....unfortunately, the Crom doesn't satisfy the "godly strength or a powerful mind" requirement.

As for leaving the Underdark with the Eggs, only to return them later: I'm experimenting with some really weird stuff. I avoided doing the "Quile's Brain" quest until I was almost done with Ust Natha, to find out if you could actually take the Brain back to Cromwell (I have an upgrade idea that requires a brain as a component), and, in fact, you can. After Ust Natha goes hostile, however, you can no longer talk to the Aboleth.

How about some upgrades that uses a whole bunch of otherwise useless items from finished quests...

Like bring any five used keys to Cromwell to forge the "Skeleton Key" (casts Knock twice per day)

Or take a bunch of the various notes and books that you collect and forge them into the "Dreary Tome of Boredom" (When read aloud to an enemy, enemy must save vs. boredom or die --those who successfully save fall asleep as per Power Word Sleep)

Asylum Wardstone + Shadow Dragon Wardstone + Jae'llat Wardstone = "Multipurpose Wardstone" (bearer will be ignored--like shadow dragon warding--by any insane creature, dragon, or drow)
--wardstone works like with Shadow dragon, if the character commits a hostile act, they are "seen"

Yup, I agree they could have done something more with those redundant items. In Neverwinter Nights btw, useless quest related items will be automatically deleted from your inventory the moment you finish the chapter in which they were needed.
