I decided to play this time through with 6 custom made characters, and figured I would only use the NPC's for the quests that involve them. If I leave a member of my current party somewhere, though, I cannot talk to them to get them back. Is this possible?

In a plain vanilla SoA, you must not:

1. kick a custom character from your party. Doing that = losing the character forever.
2. let a custom character get stoned or imprisoned. Both these states include kicking out of the party - most likely, the kicking out is here in order to allow you to leave the area without the stoned or imprisoned character.

It is possible with the Ease-of-Use-Mod, Xen already gave you the link for it so.

And Radek, when a character is Imprisoned/Petrified, he will leave your party... when the effects of Imprisoned/Petrified are counterd (Freedom/Stone to Flesh) he must re-join the party. This can be done with BioWare NPCS but not with custom made ones, because IIRC they will leave or just refuse to talk with you.
