One major difference between TotSC and ToB, though... Unlike in TotSC, you won't be able to to traverse between SoA and ToB-locations; not counting Watcher's Keep (which is accessible from both SoA and ToB), Throne of Bhaal *does* start where you left off in Shadows of Amn, but also starts on a new map... So you won't be able to travel back to SoA-locations once you start with the Throne of Bhaal-expension.

Hope you have fun with ToB, but just be real cautious when you're installing the patches. If your SoA is already patched, you can run into problems installing ToB fixes over it (see the FAQ & maybe the Baldurdash site for details, also the patches should give you this warning anyway.)

Also once you put ToB on, you can't uninstall it without uninstalling SoA entirely. [Not a big deal, but I prefer the SoA load screen ]

So you might wanna make a backup copy of your Save folder before you install ToB.

Although you can't freely travel between areas in SoA and ToB, there are some changes that affect the entire game. You can choose to play the new kit, the Wild Mage from the start. The experience cap is moved back so that characters can reach up to 8 million experience. Any level-ups that occur after 3 million XP will allow your characters to choose from the ToB high level abilities. You may or may not reach that much XP in the SoA section of the game depending on how many quests you do and how many are in your party.

Also, there is one new area that you can access in SoA (you can also reach it later from ToB). One good reason to at least go check it out right away is that you can purchase a potion bag, which you can't find anywhere else in SoA. Once your party is more experienced, you may want to start exploring the dungeon since there are some nice items available even on the first level.

Ammo belt is even better, IMHO.

Believe me, by the time you reach ToB, you'll have no reasons to return back to SoA location. All good items will be bought, all tough xp-giving monsters will be slain, all quests will be done (OK, the ones you manage to trigger ). Random wandering through areas as in BG I is no longer great - as there are no 'just action' areas (well, almost no) in BG II. And ToB story will grip you tight and never let you even think about returning to SoA. Such is the interest of ToB.

No you can't go back to Athkatla once you've completed the SOA section. The only area you can visit in both the SOA map and the TOB map is Watchers Keep.

You can install TOB straight away when you get it it will not have any negative effects on your SOA game and will infact enhance it with some new features. Once you've completed the SOA chapters the game will automatically continue onto the TOB sections.
