I may only be on Chapter 2 the first time round, but I sincerely believe that a gnomish Cleric/Illusionist truly kicks! The amount of spell slots you get per level is doubled, while you get one extra illusion spell/level, essential for avoiding otherwise fatal hits. What does everyone else think? Or do you not have a fave class?

This is an excellent combination if you like spell casting. I always thought that a specialist mage is a good idea - as an illusionist you only miss the necromancy spell, something you can live without.
Most toughest enemies for you will be a bunch of magic resistant, regenerating creatures like vampires. But for the rest you should be quite able to handle it. What I miss is a character that is able to cast ALL the mage, priest and druid spells. Druids have two very nice spells: insect plague and nature's beauty. Which is the highest mage/cleric level you will be able to cast? Do you have the bonus merchants installed? They have a very nice item for a mage, also for cleric/mages. |

Just thought of another +-point for cleric/illusionist...illusionists can't cast necromantic mage spells, but they CAN cast their frequently more powerful priest equivalents, e.g., animate dead.
P.S. I appreciate all of your suggestions...especially Xan's...the Blade always struck me as being infinitessimally cool. |

For pure power, a Sorcerer, Kensai->Mage, Archer->Mage, or Fighter/Mage.
Close seconds include classes like the Ranger/Cleric, Swashbuckler->Mage, Cavalier, Kensai->Thief and Wizard Slayer->Thief. The Monk fades in the extremely high levels because power is largely determined by items, and the vast selection of items that Monks cannot use limits their capabilities (how is a Solo Monk going to take down the Chromatic Demon, for example). As for personal taste, I'll be an Elven Thief/Mage. That's me all over!
