Uh party trouble

In bg2 can you make your own party of 6 people like in icewind dale or do you have to use the other chars from the story?? If you can make your own party can someone plz tell me how.

You can make your own party by starting a multiplayer game with a serial (not TCP/IP) connection. Create all six party members, and click on the skull icons next to each one to tell the game that all six party member slots have been filled. Start the game. Once the beginning cutscene is over and you've dealt with Imoen, save the game. Quit BG2, and move that save file out of your multiplayer save game folder ("mplayer" in your BG2 directory) and into your singleplayer save game folder ("save" in your BG2 directory). Start BG2, and you should be able to load your formerly multiplayer saved game as a singleplayer.

I am also trying to do the same but cannot get past a certain point.

So far i have been able to open a serial connection and fill in the 6 faces with pre generated characters, however, i cannot get any further. I currently have control of the 6 characters (my name is above their on the arbitration screen).

I think i need to do something else but whatever i try leads to a dead end, is their a simple way through?
